Edem is where Athens goes swimming after work. It is free, it is open, and on a July evening the promenade behind it carries a steady traffic of runners, cyclists, and people carrying a towel down from the tram stop. The sand is coarse and the beach is narrow, but the water is clean and the sunset over the Saronic Gulf is the same one the expensive clubs are selling further south.
The character here is unmistakably city beach: bars and souvlaki spots line the road, the crowd is young and local, and nothing needs to be booked. It is the northern gateway to the Riviera — the point where the coast stops being industrial and starts being a place people swim.
Getting there
Edem sits about 8 km north of Glyfada and 7 km from central Athens, with its own tram stop a short walk from the water — the most direct public-transport access of any beach on this coast. Parking on the surrounding streets is difficult on summer evenings, so the tram is genuinely the better option.
