The beach

Sounion is where the Riviera ends. The beach sits in the bay below the cape, with the Temple of Poseidon on the cliff above it, a fifth-century BC sanctuary that has been the last thing sailors saw leaving Attica for two and a half thousand years.

The swimming is good: open Aegean water, clean and deep, with the cape sheltering one side of the bay. But most people come for the combination: a swim in the afternoon, then the short climb up to the temple in time for the sunset that draws crowds every evening of the year.

Getting there

About 33 km south of Glyfada and 44 km from central Athens, the full length of the coastal road, roughly fifty minutes by car from Glyfada. KTEL buses run from central Athens to Sounion along both the coastal and inland routes. There is parking at the archaeological site, which is ticketed separately.
