The beach
Varkiza is where the Riviera opens out. The bay is broad and shallow, the sand runs for well over a kilometre, and behind it sits a small lagoon and wetland that keeps the back edge green. After the tight coves of Vouliagmeni the sheer width of the place comes as a relief.
The beach is mostly organised, with several operations along its length, but there is free sand between them and the water is consistently clean. The village behind has tavernas, cafés, and a genuine summer-town atmosphere in the evenings.
Getting there
About 7 km south of Glyfada and 18 km from central Athens, at the end of the coastal road through Vouliagmeni. Buses toward Varkiza and Saronida serve the village, and parking is available along the front and in the village streets.
