The beach
Megalo Kavouri is the wider, more usable of the peninsula's two beaches: a long shallow bay where the water stays waist-deep well out from shore and turns a pale turquoise on a bright day. Pines come down almost to the sand at the edges, and the view runs clear across the gulf.
It is free, unpretentious, and popular with people who live in Vouliagmeni and Voula rather than with visitors. There are tavernas and cafés within walking distance on the peninsula road, but the beach itself is left largely as it is.
Getting there
About 5 km south of Glyfada, 18 km from central Athens, on the loop road around the Kavouri headland. Reachable by coastal bus toward Vouliagmeni or by car; parking is along the road and fills up by late morning in summer.
