The beach
Lagonissi occupies the neck of a small peninsula about halfway between Athens and Sounion, with the well-known resort taking up the headland itself and public beach on either side. The water is open Saronic, deeper and cooler than the sheltered bays further north, and the setting is unmistakably out of the city.
This is the point on the drive south where the Riviera stops being suburban. The coastline here is lower and rockier, the settlements are seasonal, and the traffic thins out considerably.
Getting there
About 15 km south of Glyfada and 26 km from central Athens on the Athens–Sounio coastal road, roughly a twenty-five minute drive from Glyfada outside peak hours. Buses on the Sounio route serve the area.
