Agios Kosmas sits on the seaward edge of the old Hellenikon airport site, next to the Olympic sailing centre built for 2004. The result is a beach with unusual amounts of space — wide open ground behind the sand, room for water sports offshore, and none of the compression you feel at the beaches closer to the city.
It is a free public beach, and its character is shifting as the enormous Hellenikon redevelopment takes shape inland. For now it remains one of the most spacious swimming spots inside the city limits, with the marina and sailing club giving the whole stretch a nautical, slightly windswept feel.
Getting there
Around 5 km north of Glyfada and 10 km from central Athens, Agios Kosmas is reachable by tram and by bus along the coastal avenue, and it is one of the few beaches on this stretch where parking is genuinely easy. Expect construction traffic in the area while the Hellenikon works continue.
