The Astir peninsula is the most protected piece of coastline on the Athens Riviera: a pine-covered headland in Vouliagmeni occupied by the Four Seasons Astir Palace and its beach. Decades of restricted access have kept it in a condition the public beaches cannot match — clear coves, mature trees down to the waterline, and a shoreline that has never been built over.
The beach operates on a paid, organised basis with full service, and there are ancient remains on the headland itself, including the small temple of Apollo Zoster. Whether the price is worth it depends entirely on what you want from a day at the sea; what is not in question is that this is the best-preserved stretch of coast within easy reach of the city.
Getting there
About 6 km south of Glyfada and 19 km from central Athens, on the Vouliagmeni headland. Access is by car, taxi, or the coastal bus toward Vouliagmeni and Varkiza; the tram does not come this far south.
